Re: Overdrive Electrical problems 700 1990

I am assuming we are talking about a manual transmission (m-46 4 speed with an overdrive?). They do have a 4th gear sensor located on the passengers side near the top. It prevents the overdrive from being engaged in gears other than 4th. Bypassing that sensor would allow you to engage the overdrive in any gear. Grounding the wire to the 4th gear sensor would simulate the function of the switch when the transmission is in 4th gear. If ou get normal function of the overdrive with the 4th gear sensor wire grounded you need to replace the sensor. It is easiest to use a deep well socket and a pair of vise grips to remove/install the 4th gear sensor. Don't use reverse in overdrive. Good luck.
