The Bentley manual says you can check the knock sensor system by looking at the timing with a timing light while tapping the engine block near the knock sensor. The timing should change up to 6 degrees. The engine needs to be warmed up and set at about 1500 rpm. If there is no change the sensor is probably bad although I would also check the wiring.
