B23 Oil Pumps 200 83

Folks,

Looking to put another oil pump in the kid's 242GT I noticed that the later, small-screen/pickup ones have a valve device screwed into the top of the pump body (not the internal pressure relief valve) which is open when the engine isn't running and then closes (hopefully!) once it is running. Not sure what the purpose of this thing is. Earlier pumps don't have it. Can anyone see any problems with removing the valve and replacing it with a threaded bung? I can't. But I need glasses so that doesn't count.
