This evening I just finished installing rear Bilstein's on my 87 245. No problems at all, everything looked okay. I got in the car for a test drive, and immediately noticed irregular knocking sounds coming from the passenger side rear as I drove along. Although the car rode fine, I stopped anyway and looked for the problem. Couldn't see a thing. Drove back home for a more detailed check and found nothing. Had my wife bounce up and down on the right rear bumper hoping to see the problem. Nothing again. Got back in the car for another test ride, and the knocking sounds continued. As the surface of the road got rougher, the knocking sounds got louder, but still what I would call irregular. It also seems as if the knocking noises are a direct result of the suspension movement of the rear wheel. The shocks I replaced were the Boge Automatics that were the standard equipment on these cars. I also had 25mm IPD sway bars installed several months ago, so I did have to remove and replace one each of the bolts on the trailing arms in order to install the Bilsteins.
Might there be a connection. There was no problem at all before the new shocks were installed. Could someone please help me! Thanks.
