fault code 2-3-2 200 1990

I recieve a reoccuring fault code on my 1990 240 DL ( 213 k ). CHILTON'S book says " faulty O2 sensor or signal.

My O2 sensor was replaces 3 years ago, they are reliable, and I do not realy want to spend another 125.00 if the present one is not defective.

The code does not activeate the " check engine " light on the insterment pannel.

My mechanic told me to disconnect the battery and the message would go away, but that is not solving the problem.

What must I do to properly diagnose and correct this problem.

I get a paltry 24-26 mpg and the engine does not burn oil, I have hade to add 1 qt. to it during the last 5 years I have owned it.
