Fosterize it?/misc. OD stuff

The OD on my 84 242Ti/M46 only works after the car is warmed up. I have to drive for about 5-10 mins (haven't actually timed it)before the light will stay on. If I start cold, get on the highway, shift into 4th gear, and press the button every 30 sec or so, the light won't come on at all at first. Then, it will blip on and quickly off for a few trys, and then stay on. Once it stays on, it's fine. Wierd huh? Another thing, if I declutch, press the button, and then re-engage, my od won't engage. If engages if I let my foot off the gas and press the button, but it engages most smoothly if I actually give the car a little gas. Is this bad for the OD? The OD didn't work when I got the car, so I think the solenoid hadn't moved for a long time and is probably a little gummed up, I'll check this when I have the tranny drained to do the clutch. Any thoughts?
