no 5th gear - how fast can a diesel go? 200 1984

I am the proud owner of a '84 265 diesel wagon. It has the electronic overdrive but it doesn't work. (a volvo dealer said it had to be replaced) I have checked the brickboard and determined the same.

The 5th gear light lights but no OD. I have two questions:

1- how fast can I run the diesel with no OD? I try to keep it under 63 mph- after that it gets noisey.

2- how hard would it be to buy one used (and have it crap ouut on me ) , or should I have mine fixed ? Or should I just drive under 62 MPH
