It is possible that the tow to the mechanic jarred the car around enough to reconnect whatever wiring problem you have. The mechanic was probably just lucky. I think your car would still cough and sputter with a faulty AMM. have you checked for low voltage power at the coil when the car is not starting? That would rule out the ignition switch at least.
