Child seat woes 700 1990

I'm having a great deal of trouble installing a car seat in my 1990 740 Sedan. I'm using a "locking clip" on the belt since this model year Volvo does not have the "child seat" switch on the seat belt buckle (as on my wife's 1998 S70).

The problem is the height of the "receiver" (the part of the seat belt where you plug in the belt) interferes with the back of the child seat and the locking clip. There's just not enough space to get the seat in nice and snug. I've noticed on our S70 that the "receivers" are much lower and it is quite easy to install the seat.

Oh yeah, we've tried several different brands of child seats and have the same problem with each. Any help is greatly appreciated!
