Auto tranny fluid 200 1983

I have a question about the auto tranny fluid level. When I drive the car and stop to check the fluid level there is barely any fluid on the stick. But when I put the stick back into the tranny tube and recheck it shows plenty of fluid on the stick. Why is this? This is the case for all my volvos with automatic trans. Do not get this with American cars. Any info is appreciated. This is an '83 244 T. Thanks, Jim
