Greg,

I have the solution. When you said the Reverse lights didnt work. and you have to hit shift lock there first thing that came to my mind was PNP Switch or Gear selector switch. Its the (park Neutral Position) switch. I replaced this on my 96 960. It took me about 45 minutes but It may take you longer. Try starting the car in Neutral. Will it let you? This is also assosiated with he switch. I know these beasts can be dificult to own but the saftey/performance factor is worth it. If you have any other questions feel free to E-mail me.
