Re: egr and flame trap 200 84

Luke -

Large Q, I'll have a go.

1)"what do the egr and flame trap do,"

The Exhaust Gas Recirculator is a device on some models to reduce emissions. My 1975 245DL had one, but it's long gone.

The flame trap is part of the Positive Crankcase Ventilation system. It is there to prevent a backfire in the intake manifold from igniting the oil vapors in the crankcase. The PCV system is an emissions reducer.

".... where are they located...

1) I don't know about the EGR, maybe some other Brickster does.

2) the flame trap is found, on your B23F engine, on the DS of the block, down below intake rail #3 and #4, inside a rubber housing. The housing has a small vacuum tube coming up to connect to the intake manifold near rail #2, and a larger hose that connects to the air hose just ahead of the throttle body and on the opposite side from the hose to the IAC.

"....and how does one go about shutting off that god awful idiot light that goes off every howmany thousand miles for the egr valve?

On the back of the speedo is connected a short (12 inch or so) speedo cable that goes to a black box about the size of a cigarette pack which is usually found by removing the under-dash pad. Disconnect the wiring harness from that box and the light will not light up again.

Good Luck,

Bob

PS HAve you got a Haynes and/or Bentley shop manual? there is another post dated Monday about a sale on Bentley books.
