Re: replacing tie-rod question (squeek squeek) 140-160 1970

Hi Chris

You need a ball joint splitter to get the taper on the ball joint loose. The tracking needs re-setting afterwards.

You can tell whether the play is in the bearing or elsewhere by getting someone to but their foot on the brake as you jiggle the wheel. If the play goes away with the brake on it is wheel bearing. I've always referred to them as castellated nuts but US nomenclature may be different.

Incidentally it is a taper roller bearing so there should be movement on the washer underneath the nut, you should just be able to twist the washer freely from side to side.

Regards
