90' 240 Cut locked up on the expressway! 200 1990

Well, I just recently bought and repaired a 1990 volvo 240dl, with around 255k miles on it, running strong until it locked up yesterday. Well at first, it seemed to lock up becuase the engine began making a slight tapping sound on the expressway. I at first ingnored it because I thought it was coming from the car next to me; then it got progressively louder, so I started to make my way to the breakdown lane. Once I made my way to the second to last lane, the tapping noise over took the engine noise, and my car began to slow down. I knew this thing was gonna quit on me, so I jumped in front of the big-rig in the next lane and cut into the slow lane, going fairly fast. Right after my car made it to the slow lane, it just cut off. I tried to restart it, but the starter wouldn't even turn it. I took out my socket breaker, and put it on the crank shaft, and found that the motor would turn one revolution clockwise and one anti-clockwise. Anyone else had this problem? I thought I may have thrown a rod, or the motor locked up, but I just changed the oil 800miles ago. Plus, wouldn't it not turn at all?
