Spun Main bearing 140-160 1973

I fear I have a spun main bearing. The noise started as an intermittiant scratching noise, like something hittint the fan blade. Now, after a hard righthand cloverleaf exit, the noise came on consistently and excalated the last mile to my house.

The Haynes manual recommends big end replacement at 25-35K mile and main at 50K, which really surprises me.

Since the car is an automatic and pretty rusty, I'd rather not pull the engine to do a total rebuild. Compression is still high and even.

Anyone who has dropped the front axel to accesss the sump and replace the bearings, please respond with advice and recommended procedures.

Thannk much in advance.
