Speaker mounting advice for '92 245? 200 1992

I am the proud owner of a cherry '92 240 wagon with 92k original miles and a very mediocre stock stereo.

I'm looking for advice on upgrading the stereo, specifically good locations for mounting speakers. A buddy of mine had a GREAT sounding stereo set up in an '85 245, with two good 6x9" speakers mounted in the tailgate, but the weight of the magnets eventually kept his tailgate from being able to stay up, and raising and lowering the tailgate probably wasn't great for the speakers.

I'm looking for bass (not hip hop bass, but full clean bass. I'm a jazz bassist) and need input on what/where I could mount in the rear to get some good bass. The front speakers will be easy to upgrade, and while I'm asking, does anyone have good experience with replacement units (cd player) for the the high dash mount location of the later 240s?

Thanks so much for your help.
