So you put a B230F engine into a car built for the B23F engine, right?

Sorry about the starter mess. They are a PITA, rather like they hung the starter out there and built the car around it. (Actually they did that but it was the heater blower motor).

What did the engine do, anything? Did you change the electronics, ECU and Ignition control module? Engine wiring harness or parts thereof? The 1988 is a LH Jetronic-II FI control system as is the 1984, but there are differences due to the engine differences. Some tech type of the Bboard will help. Post with the "rest of the story".
