Inserting studs and intake manifold torque 200 84

I have never put a stud in before. How do you screw it into the block without wrecking the threads? Why don't they just use bolts? I am putting the intake manifold back on but my Haynes manual does not list how much torque to put on the nuts. Or is there a torque? It would be nice if there was not, since I don't have a torque wrench anyway. All I know is that they were not very tight when I took them off.
