On all but the handling stakes the VW will be a step back. You may be better off with a Subaru Legacy (NOT the Outback): excellent reliability, longevity closer to RWD Volvos, all wheel drive sticks to the road, sharp handling, reasonable interior space, good crash performance. Part prices higher than RWD Volvo's but not often needed.
