Jolting upshift from 1st to 2nd?? 900 1993

I usually take off from the light with the shift lever in 2nd. But the automatic up shift first to second is a pretty big jerk. Once I get the revs up (around 3200 or higher) I manually bump it up to third. Then only if all is clear ahead will I up to 4th. City driving is generally done in 2nd and 3rd.

Is the jerk from 1st to 2nd normal. Can I train my foot to deal with it?
