Help!!!!Blown Headgasket 700 1986

Hello,

I have a car from my parents that is giving us some problems now. Our old brick was going strong until she blew a head gasket. The car needs that replaced and needs new brakes all the way around. My mom wants to junk it but I wanted to see if we could fix it for less than the $1600 price qouted for the above by our mechanic(He is a fair guy from what I know)

The car is fine besides those two things and I wonder how hard it would be to replace the headgasket. It is a non turbo four banger. It has an auto trans and 160 k miles but runs nice. How hard and what is a rough price for the headgasket repair(where to buy) And also what about the brakes? Should I find a 940 or newer 740 and retrofit those or buy new rotors? What is the most economical? How long will it take a pretty inexperienced but determined person like myself to do this? I do have friends that can help if I get stuck and then there is Brickboard too. I want to do the work unless it is a bad idea. Thanks for any info. Jon
