Studding your own winter tires. 200 1991

I would like to put ice studs in my winter tires. I have the right size studs, number 13's and have managed to push in a few so far by wiggling them in with vise grips. They protrude beyond the tread by about an 1/8 of an inch. Is there an easier way to do this at home. How do I know if the stud is seated and will they stay in. I should say that the tires are a year old and have some dirt down in the stud holes. I clean this out as well as I can with a drill bit. Any better methods?

Thanks John Wilson
