bunch of 1985 740t questions 700 1985

Brickers:

Assorted queries listed below. All thoughts are welcome and encouraged.

1) The red light on center console (above the rear ashtray) hasn't worked for awhile, even though all other electronics work. What might this be related to? I changed the bulbs and it had no effect. Any ideas?

2) I recently pulled apart the center console (to fix #1) and found a 12v 2x relay next the base of the emergency brake. The wires from this lead to the seat warmer control button and the ebrake warning light (?). I've noticed that while teh seatwarmer button has lit when I switched it, the seat hasn't heated up (I don't think). Is this relay responsible? Regardless, what does this relay control?

3) The other day I opened the hood after a trip to town. The manifold was cherry colored/glowing, and I got a little nervous. I've subsequently noticed this happening after long trips as well. GGiven the fact that its the exhaust system and my car lacks an intercooler I figured it was normal for it to run hot. However, I was recently going through the FAQ section and read about a faulty knock sensor being responsible for causing the exhaust to run overly hot. I also experience another symptom cited where letting up on the gas when cruising in lower gears causes a kind of surging/rocking back and forward of the car for a few moments as it winds down. I had thought this was just normal given the sensitivity of the lower gears, but now I'm not too sure. Am I being paranoid? Too much information in the hands of a neophyte maybe?

4) The other day I was headed home and noticed the radio (original volvo component) lights were fading in and out. Eventually the radio went black except for the frequency display (i.e., all the backlighting elements). None of teh otehr in dash lights were dimming, but I played with the dimmer anyway. After moving the dial around for a little while, cranking it all the way down and all the way up it finally went on. Whether this had to do with my fiddling I have no idea (there was a delay between when I stopped and when it went back on fully). The whole time the battery meter was reading above the middle, totally normal. What's the story here?

That's all the questions I've got for now. Any help on this stuff would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,

Rick
