are all electronic speedos good for all years? (86-93?) 200 89

I bought a spare speedometer at the junk yard today. I pulled it out of an '87 240. When I got home and put it in my '89, it didn't work. No odometer, no speed indication, no trip odometer, but all of the other gauges worked (I put in a whole new cluster with tach, speedo, temp, and fuel gauges). When I pulled the "new" cluster out, I noticed that the back of the speedo looks a little different. Did I just get the wrong year? Or is the speedo itself just broken?
