Third Seat Travelling in Wagon 200 89

One more question for the masses.

We've got the third seat and have used it around town plenty. Never used it on the highway for long treks.

My other half and I are discussing whether to put it to use this holiday season to make an 8 hour trek with three kids. This would also involve buying a Thule carrier for the top.

I've posted before on a similar topic but am looking for additional input from all you seasoned veterans of the third seat.

Would we be foolish to subject 2 of our kids to 8 hours of winter driving (riding)in the third seat?

Gas mileage will obviously suffer with the carrier but how much? Hardly noticeable, noticeable, or a drastic difference? Doesn't really matter I guess but more curious than anything.

Look forward to hearing from any who can give an opinion. Thanks!!
