unknown engine connection/piece? 700 1985

model: 1985 740t

engine: b230ft

There is a black, rectagular plastic piece mounted on top of my engine on a metal stand. This piece has three wires coming into it, and when I remove the cover (which just slides up and off) I see four connection slots inside (like the slots for a relay in teh relay board).

While three wires lead into this piece, it doesn't appear to have any purpose. I'm wondering what it does. It's mounted right on top of the engine itself, behind the last O in VOLVO on the engine (or thereabouts). It is connected via a metal stand that is hooked under one of the main bolts on top of the engine.

Any responses about this piece would be welcome.

Thanks,

Rick
