AW71 oil level got me puzzled 700 1988

Maybe someone out there can explain this one. It has me scratching my head.

I checked the oil level in my wife's '88 745T now that I think I have the tranny oil leak at the radiator fitting fixed. I pulled out the dip stick with the engine running and warm. The dip stick was DRY! Gave it a quick wipe, and stuck it back in. Pulled it out again, and it indicated that I may be slightly over filled. Repeated the process, and it still indicated that I was slightly overfilled.

I have been seeing this behavior for the last couple weeks as I have been watching the oil level while dealing with the leak. Why would I get a dry dip stick when I first pull it out, then have oil coated stick after I stick it back in?

Got any ideas? Which is the true oil level, low or high?

Thanks for you thoughts,

Gary
