Shift Indicator light ? 200 1990

Hi I hope someone can help me. What does it mean when the shift indicator light blinks on and off repeatedly after i am done shifting.Normally it would come on when it was time to shift and then i would do that and next the light would go off ,but now its doing this weird thing going on and off.Also i noticed that the car starts to hesitate at the same time this light is doing its thing.Could it be the ecu telling the fuel pump to shut off?....
