Acceleration Gone 700 89

I have an 89 740 Turbo Wagon that has been running very well up until lately. Towards the end of last week, however, that all changed.

The symptoms:

If I'm driving at 40 on a local road and go to accelerate, the car will downshift but the rpms only go to about the 3000 mark and their is no turbo boost or turbo sound. Instead, the boost guage goes down to about the 9 o'clock position. Normally it would have moved right to between 12 o'clock and 1 o'clock. When this happens the car seems to drag and there is no acceleration.

My thought:

I've heard of bad air mass meters causing similar symptoms. Could that be the problem here?

Any advice would be helpful.

Erik the novice.
