The problem keeps coming back! 700 1985

I have a problem with my '85 745ti... It has had this problem with jerking pretty severly (it's missing) under light acceleration, and sometimes under more too... I have taken it to the shop twice now, and it was better both times after for a while, and then it slowly got worse again. The first time they told me to get a new distributor cap, and spark plugs, they unclogged the #4 injector. They also replaced the compressor bypass valve. Then the issue slowly came back again, so took it back to the shop, and this time they say that the timing is really far advanced, and that they found that the engine wiring harness was coming unplugged(?). Well it was better again... this time for about a month, but now it is coming back again. So I took out my timing light, and discovered that the timing mark wasn't coming up anywhere on the chart, let alone 12 off of TDC... So I call the shop. They say I should bring it in so they can look at it. He said the lower pulley is mounted in rubber, and that it has spun, so the mark will not line up no matter how hard I try. I know a bit about cars, but I'm not sure if this guy is just trying to take advantage of me or what. I asked him what I should look for, but he implied that I would most likely screw it up, and that I sould bring it in for him to look at it. This did not make me happy, plus he wanted $160 for the f^$$# pulley! Its only $275 for the Unorthodox underdrive pulley from MVP... What should I do?
