Selt Belt Reminder 700 1989

Hi! Any help appreciated - I have a 1989 740 (UK specification) - no problems for ages until......one day the seat belt reminder light started flashing - I thought the the plug with the wires/bulb which locates in the belt stalk which is bolted to the seat had fallen out - as this has happened before, but it was secure. I took the seat out and checked the wiring - all seemed ok. I looked in wiring diagram - thought I could join the black and green wire - this just seemed to blow fuse for one of the front and one of the rear day running lights (fuse 22 I think - surely a coincidence??). So wiring diagram shows system using hazard lights relay - so I cut one of the yellows out of back of fuse box - hazards and selt belt reminder still worked - so I cut the other - and neither worked! Also noticed that neither the grey or green (or black, though I assume this is a ground) have power at the multi plug under the seat. The annoying thing is I ALWAYS wear my selt belt. How does this system work - or even, how can I by pass it - it's driving me mad!! Thanks........
