When I first got my 240 last year I asked what the Achilles heels were for the 240's. Got some good info - mostly about the body and interior. What about the mechanical failure rate of various 240 engine, trans, driveshaft, rear, and suspension parts? A list would be very helpful.
For example, just about any mechanic will tell you that on most cars fuel injectors are a dependable part that does not often have problems. I assume e that the alternators, starters, steering pumps, and throttle body are also low failure items for Volvos. But what about all the mechanical other parts?
The prior owners did not do any preventive maintenance, only fixed things as they were needed.
I need to know where to focus and test for, and identify potential problem areas. Yep, I already resoldered that main relay and the OD relay. I have all the connectors clean, all the ground points cleaned and tight. Recently went thru quite an ordeal with one problem after another but it is working okay for now.
I know the suspension needs most of the bushings replaced [from being down under there many times], and I was going to just start replacing mechanical parts at random, probably based on the easiness of the repair. But it occurred to me while driving around tonight that I could very well replace a part that is perfectly long lasting and that does not have any problem. It is even conceivable that I could replace my good [OEM] used part with an inferior new part (and possible defective [insert: sneaky Pete China made cover up part] eeks!!!).
