what does it mean when fuel pump makes a thumping sound and does not run?? 200 1982

my fuel pump makes a thumping sound. when i turn the key the pumps dont turn on and when i pulled the cover off my fuel pump relay and manually pushed the switches the it would cause the fuel pump to make a thumping sound. the relays dont click either. any suggestions on what to do? new relay or is my fuel pump dead? its only a year old(bosch)? thanks
