heater fan, auto climate control 700 1987

Was the engine cold when you first tried the climate control? There is a temperature switch located in one of the coolant hoses connected to the heater core that turns the blower fan on when the coolant gets to approximately 95 degrees. When you put the climate control into the defrost setting, this switch is bypassed and the fan runs at full speed no matter what the coolant temperature. It sounds as if your system is working correctly.
