stalling while braking 200 1981

I have an 81' GLE and it stalls during braking. If I put the car in neutral or press the clutch and allow the engine to return to idle I can press the brakes and the engine idles fine. However if I brake while going to neutral or pressing the clutch the engine will usually stall or drop to 2-300 rpm before recovering. This is my first Volvo and I am waiting for my bentley manual to arrive. Thanks.
