whining sqeal from front of engine 900 1996

I have a 1996 960 with 96K miles. It has had a whining squeal that comes from the top front of the engine. I sounded to me just like a failing drive belt idler pulley bearing. So, I replaced it. No change. I tried "sounding" the noise with a listening rod and it sounds like it might be the camshaft bearings. Any ideas? This engine has been well cared for. Is this something that typically fails? What are the options?
