Engine washing - yes or no

Hi everyone,
I just bought a '92 940T. I have owned a number of cars over the years and have always washed my engines at the manual car wash every few months. I cover the distributor, coil and any other electrical/electronic component in the engine compartment and have never had any problems, but this is my first turbo engine and I am hesitant to spray water on an engine with a hot turbocharger. I know there are some people who don't believe in ever washing the motor but for me a clean engine compartment is very important. I would like to get a consensus about engine cleaning from other owners. Thanks.
