Do knock sensors die a lingering or sudden death? 900 1992

The car is a '92 940 GL with ~144K miles.

A few weeks back the check engine light came on. Investigation revealed code 1-4-3 corresponding to the knock sensor. The car had no other symptoms of knock sensor failure e.g. loss of power or excessive fuel consumption. I disconnected the lead, cleaned and replaced the connector, erased the code, and all seemed fine.

Last night the CE light came back on. It is the same code. Once again, no other symptoms. This time I really did a job on the connector, both wire and sensor ends - I scraped the terminals with sandpaper and replaced the connector with silicone grease packing. Deleted the code and took the car for a 10 mile test drive - all seems ok so far.

Am I on the right track and will the problem be gone? Of course time will tell, but I wanted some opinions....could it be that the knock sensor is itself dying a slow death? Is this how they die, or is it more of a sudden thing? And is there anything else I should be looking for?
