check engine light 200 1990

My engine check light has recently come on. i checked the ECU and recieved the codes 121 212 231. spoke with a volvo mechanic who believed it was the oxygen sensor that was the problem and was causing the other codes to appear. is this true? if so how do i check my oxygen sensor? it is not a one-wire deal running into the exhaust downpipe, it is three wires and runs into the firewall directly, the volvo mechanic said it probably connected to the exhaust system somewhere in the back. is it now harder to replace? i would like to do it myself. advice?
