Electrical problem - starting 200 1989

I have a 1989 240D. I drove it to work and when I left work it would not start. My first thought was the fuel relay which I changed about 3 years ago. I purchased one and it did not help. I called a mechanic and he checked it over said that there was no spark. He said that after cleaning all of the contacts, it now works.
This scares me as I am afraid that there will be a reoccuring problem that was not really fixed by cleaning contacts. Is there any part such as a relay in the electrical system that may cause intermittant problems. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate comments.

Thanks,

Tom
