Statrter solenoid intermittent 700 1988

My 88 B230F starter solenoid has become intermittent. When you turn the key to the crank position, the starter motor runs, but the engine does not turn over. After 4 or 5 tries, the solenoid works, the gear engages and the engine starts right up. I remember having to climb under another car and smack the solenoid occasionally, but I'd like to know if anyone has had success in unsticking one of these in a more civilized way.

Thanks,
