Brickers:
Lately my alternator has started making some louder than normal brushing/squealing sounds. The sound seems to be more pronounced when the car is cold, and it seems to lessen a bit after a good drive. I listened attentively and the sound seems to be coming from the alternator itself and not the belt (already familiar with the squealing belts problem). Wonderig what the story is and if my alternator is dying. The next section details one possible culprit I thought I might mention.
As many are familiar I had kind of a saga with my coolant/flush job a few weeks back. In the process of pulling the stat, replacing the housing, filling the coolant, pulling the housing, and reinserting the stat once the engine and top hose were filled with coolant I sloshed a little bit of coolant down the side of the engine. In the process of the sloshing a little bit of coolant got onto the alternator and may have dripped down into it via the venting on the front of the alt body. I can't be sure, but I believe the aforementioned alternator noise may have started after those drippings entered the alternator.
Anyone know what my problem might be? I know that antifreeze basically acts like silicone and can slick things up a bit when it dries. If it is the fact that some small amount of antifreeze entered the alternator and slicked something up, is there any way to repair it/pull it and overhaul it? I'm planning on replacing all thw bushings for the PS and Alt asap (they've started to sag quite a bit), so that would seem a good opportunity to work on it.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Rick
