96 960 Check Engine Light 900 1996

The 96 960 has the OBD II, requiring the use of the proprietary reader to get the 5 digit troble code.

But a Haynes manual on Automobile Computer codes says the old three digit code is still available from the diagnostics unit just like the older models.

I have searched high and low and everywhere in between and can not find anything that even remotely resembles the picture I have seen of the pre-95 diagnostic units. Does anyone know where the diagnostics unit is and if it is true that the 3 digit light-flash trouble code can be read in this fashion? The light came on recently, and not completely coincidentally the idle got rough. All the obvious things have been checked. I need that trouble code!
