I doubt you have self levelling shocks and even if you did I think(?) they work in tandem so if one fails the whole system lowers. Anyway it could be anythhing suspension related. Unfortunatly the only way to fix/check a volvo is to get down there and check. I have experience with the rear suspension of 240s and blown bushing aren't always easy to diagnose, basiacally leave the car on the ground and grab various trailling/torque arms etc. and see if you feel excess play, I have seen posts that say blown trailling arm bushings cause excessive sag in the rear. If you want to replace bushings yourself go through the archives and do a search. Also i just read your post again and it's true that the symptom sounds very much like failed Nivomats, buy a manual or search the sites that give the technical data on specific years (check archive).
