Problems with M-40

I recently purchased a used M-40 transmission. I had a local shop install it in my 122. First gear has synchro problems, second gear, and third gear are fine.Fourth gear is difficult to enter, and "pops" out at any lowering of acceleration. The person who sold me the part says that "It sat for a long time-and needs working in" He also states that the shop probably did something to it. Since my knowledge is Zero, I'm looking for feedback. As far as I know the shop opened the box only to put in a fresh gasket. They had no reason to mess with gears. I want to handle this properly so I am hoping the Forum can help. J.W.
