240 whines when cold

Despite its Scandinavian heritage, my 88 240 GL seems to dislike cold weather. When the outside temp is below 40 degrees or so it has a loud and annoying whine from the engine compartment - maybe from the power steering pump area although it is difficult to identify the precise location. When the car warms to operating temp it goes away, or when the outside temp is 50 degrees or more there is no whine. My shop guys think it may be tranny related, a frightening possibility. Any experience or thoughts?
