DON'T BUY A NEW CABLE until you read this.....(long) 200 1982

I just did this job on my '82 245/M46. I called the local Volvo dealer and they wanted $53 for a speedo cable. IPD wants about $35. I called my local mom and pop auto parts store, and they had a universal replacement inner speedo cable kit. It cost $3.95(!). I figured, what the hell, if it doesn't work, I'll buy the new Volvo cable. The kit comes with a length of inner cable which is square on one end. I disconnected the old cable at the speedo and at the tranny. (no allen wrench is needed; the cable has a knurled collar that simply unscrews by hand or with pliers if it's stuck). I then pulled the speedo end of the inner cable out of the outer cable enough to cut the end off. There is a white plastic bushing molded to the inner cable about 1" in from the speedo end. You have to cut it off beyond the bushing. Once this is done, simply pull the old inner cable out from the transmission end. Now grease the new inner cable and insert it into the outer cable from the speedo end, squared end first. Keep pushing it in until it comes out the tranny end. Insert the square end of the cable into the speedo drive and screw the knurled collar down tight. Now up at the speedo end, the kit comes with a squared end that you install on the speedo end of the cable with the included crimping tool. Pull the inner cable out of the outer cable at the speedo end and cut it to length, so that, with the squared end installed, it will stick out of the outer cable the same distance as the old inner cable. Now install the square end, slide the inner cable all the way back into the outer cable, making sure it fully engages with the speedo drive on the tranny end, and reconnect the cable to the speedo.

I did this last weekend, and my speedo now works perfectly. I saved about $50 and a lot of work over replacing the entire cable with a new one.
