Rust Remedy?

I read in Dries Bakkenes' account of his 122 restoration on the Dutch Volvo Klassiekers website, that he used motor oil mixed with diesel fuel followed by a sprayed on coating of what he called "wax" to treat those nearly impossible to access body areas to keep surface rust from turning into rot. He didn't know the brand name, but after some e-mail back-and-forthing, we came to the conclusion that "wax" is the yellow rust preventitive that, among others, J.C. Whitney sells in a kit with an applicator. It goes on liquid, and then congeals into something resembling the aftermath of a really bad chest-cold. I find it a bit difficult to believe that this stuff would actually stick to metal coated with motor oil, but if it did, it would be an easy, if messy, way of dealing with a common problem, particularly in old cars. Have any of you tried this?
