Wierd electrical prob with headlights 200 1990

I had a very odd electrical problem today. My 90' 240dl had been running around all day long fine, even my non-working blower decided to work today, giving out good clean heat until I had to brake hard and my lights were on. All of a sudden, all of my instrument panel lights came on and the engine cut out. I coasted down the hill, and tried to restart, which the engine would turn over, but it would not stay on. I popped the hood, and tried to turn on my hazards, but they only buzzed, and did not light. After that, the main ground wire off of the battery caught fire, which I blew out after yanking the key from the ignition and blowing. Anyway, after shutting off the headlights, the car worked fine. My turning signals work and my hazards work as well. However, my fuel and temp gauges have both gone north. They stay at their highest points. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks
