1990 760 Valve Clearance Adjustment 700 1990

I've had my '90 760GLE for 9 years now and it has 155,000 miles on it. I love driving it. It still looks good and feels and drives the same way it did when I bought it in 92 and had 26,000 miles on it. Despite all the bad rap the V6 has got, this one has been trouble-free. Of course, that may be because it's the B280F and not the earlier B28F model.

My question is, how often should the valves be adjusted? They were adjusted at around 60K and the mechanic told me they had to be done every 60k. The cost is about $300 which is high. Is there any way one could tell if the valves actually need adjustment or should I just take it in and let them do it whether it needs it or not? Thanks for any suggestions.
